Should Dems Rope-a-Dope?
James Carville, who famously helped Bill Clinton win with the "It's the economy, stupid" strategy recommends Dems to roll over and play dead
In a recent New York Times guest essay, James Carville made the case “for the most daring political maneuver in the history of our party: roll over and play dead.” Boxing legend Muhammad Ali defeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle match (1974) using a rope-a-dope strategy. In the rope-a-dope strategy, the contender leans against the ropes of the boxing ring to draw non-injuring offensive punches to tire their opponent out, and once the opponent is worn out, strike!
Carvelle’s idea is that there is currently nothing Democrats can do to stop Trump even if they want to (no clear leader, no vision, no control of any branch of government, etc.), so we should roll over and play dead (take a tactical pause) and allow the Republicans to crumble beneath their weight.
Carvell suggests the first opportunity is the budget/debt ceiling. Republicans are not on the same page on this topic, so Democrats should stay out of the way and let the Republicans argue among themselves: “Simply step away and let ‘em flirt with a default. Just when they’ve pushed themselves to the brink, and it appears they could collapse the global economy — come in and save the day. Be the competent party and not the chaos party.”
After the budget fight, let the Republicans push for their tax cuts, Medicaid cuts, and food stamp cuts. “Give them all the rope they need. Let them reveal themselves as incapable of governing and, at the right moment, start making a coordinated, consistent argument about the need to protect Medicare, Medicaid, worker benefits, and middle-class pocketbooks. Let the Republicans crumble.”
That sounds like a plan. In the meantime, we should stop playing defense on lost causes and regroup so we are ready to strike when our opponent is exhausted.
With a title like that there's so many directions to go. I'll start with bottoms up - you need to make enough noise that the leaders of the Democratic party listen. I want the Dems to get their collective shit together. The same with the Republicans. That's the environment where things (good solid bills get passed) get done. That's the environment where you win back the trust of the people. Fight the right fight, pick your battles. Burning political capital on irrational positions and issues the bulk of the US citizenry opposes is stupidity. Possibly it is time for the old guard from the Democratic party to join Mitch in retirement. Who are the leaders that refuse to change positions, who won't listen to the populous and change course? Who continues to double down on the same rhetoric? Nasty Nancy, Shifty Schiff, Chucky Shoe might be a good place to start. The party is floundering, searching for real leadership and a real direction. Stop dredging Kamala up - that's not helping. While the party searches - do the right thing and earn some respect - be above party line - vote and support for logical, popular ideas. That means letting MN leadership know what you think. Amy is trying to make a name for herself and be a contender going forward - let her know. Now that Tina Smith is not seeking reelection she is starting to have a voice -funny. The Governor well he's proved he's not going to listen even if he side steps into Tina's seat. Jimmy Carville hasn't been right or maybe he's been secretly "right" for a long time. He's saying, continue the hard line politicking, 30 days out the GOP will collapses. Hmmm, what if he's wrong? Maybe it can't hurt the politicians or you the voter to hedge the bet and to support something the Republicans are doing "righter" than the Democrats. If you don't agree with anything Trump is attempting to do, then that's on you and you deserve what you get.
I’m not sure this strategy would work this time. We have this one little problem - Elon Musk. The Trump-Musk bromance is flaming. Also, Trump seems to hate our country…well, at least our Constitution. I’ve heard that there are currently 90 lawsuits against the administration. I’m waiting to see what happens when the 1st one makes it to the Supreme Court. If they side with Trump, we’re screwed. Dictatorship here we come. Oh, and don’t forget about Project 2025.
